Graphite, an elemental mineral, is a crystalline form of carbon. When used for mark making, its reflective, granular blackness can be rendered in myriad ways: delicate or bold, gestural or contained, ephemeral or enduring. My process begins with powdered graphite, rubbed by hand into quickly torn or folded paper. The folds and tears form the foundation of a geometry that speaks to me of natural formations, charts, topography, stitching. Manipulating the compositional elements through an ongoing conversation between calculation and spontaneity, I consider the concrete and the intangible, seeking threads of connection above and below the surface of visible reality, while tapping into the vast reservoir and endless malleability of the physical world.
