PHILIP BROU

ARTIST STATEMENT

My work investigates questions of identity, selfhood and the human condition. Although entirely representational, my work finds its form in a variety of media including scale models, gouache drawings, graphite drawings, and oil paintings. I divide my work into separate projects. These projects form a series of interconnected narratives with subjects such as Mohamed Atta’s hotel stay on the night before he led the September 11th attacks, the cyclonic spin of the tornado that transported Dorothy’s home to OZ, the demolition of Steven Spielberg’s childhood home in Ohio, and Space Probe Voyager 1’s journey as the farthest human-made object from our planet.

My most recent project began when I contacted Central Casting, one of the oldest and most respected casting agencies in the film industry, and through them hired groups of background actors to use as subjects for paintings.

The portraits are depicted as exactly life-sized and executed slowly and with great precision using indirect painting techniques originally developed by the Early Netherlandish painters in the 15th century. The titles are most often in reference to cinematic productions in which the background actors appear.

I am fascinated by the camouflaged role of the background actor, more commonly known as an Extra, for its focus on going unnoticed. The Extra’s job is to seamlessly blend into their environment; acting parenthetically to the stars. I believe this role is incredibly interesting in relation to the history of portraiture, film and selfhood.

I view the paintings from this project as portraits of Invisibility.
